How to Prevent Water Damage While on Holidays

So, you have FINALLY booked that well deserved holiday for you and your family!

As we all know, something always gets forgotten before you rush out the door. You know that feeling when you aren’t sure if you have turned the stove or the iron off when you have left the house?

To make sure you don’t get that anxious feeling of water damage occurring while you are off enjoying yourself, we have created a quick cheat sheet to ensure your peace of mind.

Cleaning out the gutters and checking the downpipes.
This will make certain there will be no water damage to your property while you are away should some heavy rain occur. Blocked gutters and downpipes can cause water ingress into the house, and cause vast damage. If you decide to access your roof to do this, please make sure you have some safety steps in place to ensure you return to the ground in one piece.

A visual check over your plumbing inside and out.
Items to check for example could be:
– Drains: are they all draining correctly?
– Your hot water system: are there any leaks present?
– Fittings & Fixtures: are there any leaky taps, shower heads or toilets that could cause water damage while you are away?

Turn your water off altogether
Our #1 advice would be to turn your water off at the mains. This would be the best way to make sure there are no plumbing surprises upon your return. Sometimes this is not possible due to pets being at home, irrigation timers for the lawn and gardens, and pools that require topping up.

Alternatively, to avoid water damage, you could engage a licensed plumber to attend and check over all of the above (and more) for your peace of mind.
